Nurse revalidation asks for 35 hours of continuing professional development (CPD). This page explains the CPD requirement and how to record it.
How much CPD do you need?
You need 35 hours of CPD over your three-year cycle. At least 20 of those hours must be participatory. The rest can be individual learning.
What is participatory CPD?
Participatory CPD involves other people. Examples include:
- courses and workshops;
- conferences and study days;
- team training and case discussions;
- supervised learning.
Individual CPD is learning you do on your own; for example reading, e-learning or research.
What evidence should you keep?
Keep a record for each CPD activity. The NMC asks you to note:
- the dates;
- the method and the topic;
- the number of hours, and how many were participatory;
- a link to the Code;
- the evidence, such as a certificate or your notes.
Track your CPD with Nurse Tools
Nurse Tools keeps a running total of your CPD hours. It separates participatory hours from individual hours; it stores your evidence; it shows how close you are to the 35-hour target. It is free to use. Create your free account to start. You can also read our revalidation guidance.
